A bittersweet day. Funny how on the very same day my grandson Gio participated in his first youth sporting event, my granddaughter brought to a close her high school sports career.
I watched my 4-year-old grandson walk onto the field for the first time, the excitement and nervousness vibrating through him and his little teammates. I sat on the sidelines with his mother and father daydreaming about all the games and joyous moments to come. I loved seeing how carefree and happy they all were, and the pure joy on my little Gio’s face when he scored his very first goal. It was a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life.
Fast forward a few hours to my oldest granddaughter's last softball game. As Reggie stepped up to her last at bat, (a double she legged into third with heads up base running), I got a bit emotional. I knew this was going to be it. The last time I would watch my firstborn grandchild play a game she loved. Time stood still in this moment as I remembered thirteen years of basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, and track. Driving to and from games and practices, as well as the time spent talking with her about her games. Watching her grow into the amazing, smart, funny, college-bound young lady she has become. I am so incredibly grateful that she stuck with it and have loved every minute of it.
From the time I was young, sports have always been an important part of my life and they were a huge part of my kids' lives and now my grandkids' lives. Beyond the love of the game, it has been an amazing way to connect with them. The lessons they learn on the field and court will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
Until you have experienced it, it is hard to explain the mix of emotions you feel at a time like this. Not being able to watch my granddaughter play anymore, I knew a chunk of my life would be missing. However, Gio coming along makes it a little less painful.
With the benefit of hindsight, I can say that the thousands of hours of practices, games, car rides, and conversations have and will continue to be my most cherished memories.
Pay attention, be present, love them, cheer them on because it will be over in a blink.
